About Us

KRIO DESCENDANTS UNION UK & IRELAND

Krio people of Sierra Leone are descendants of mainly four groups who founded and settled in the city of Freetown including 200+ Black Poor from Britain in 1787, 1100+ Black Americans via Nova Scotia in 1792, 500+ Jamaican Maroons in 1800, and 60,000+ Liberated Africans from West/Central Africa between 1807 and the 1860s.

The Krio Descendants Union, United Kingdom & Ireland (KDU-UK&I), was formed in 2019 by Krio residents in the British Isles in fulfillment of a desire to establish a member-led, non-profit organization with the aim of promoting our heritage, our culture, and our legacy through:

* The advancement of education of the public in the arts, culture and history of the Krio people of Sierra Leone.    * The promotion and protection of health in Freetown, Sierra Leone by the provision of programmes such as health outreach, awareness sessions in the areas of basic hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, etc.

Significant milestones include

* The successful registration of the association as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in April 2020.    * Admission of the organisation into the Krio Descendants Union Global umbrella body in November 2021.

A primary goal of the organization is to support (through our fundraising) the work of the parent body “Krio Disendant Yunion (KDY) Fritong” with particular regard to the construction in Freetown of the “Krio House/Museum”.

Our membership has been growing steadily month on month and we aim to be a genuinely inclusive and welcoming body for all Krios who identify with our aspirations.
